The St. Mark’s carol service took place on the third Sunday of Advent, at 4.00 p.m.
At the beginning of this service The Rev. Eileen made a very important announcement. She told us that the Arch Deacon for west Lancashire and Wigan, Revd. Jennifer McKenzie, had attended the morning service with some exciting news. She had reported that Eileen was to be made “The incumbent” at St. Mark’s, rather than the “Priest-in-charge”. Her induction would be led by “The Bishop of Warrington”, Bishop Beverley Mason, and would take place at St. Mark’s at 3.00 p.m. on Sunday 13th January.
This service then began with the lighting of the Advent candles – the candle of Hope, the candle of Peace and for this, the third Sunday of Advent, the candle of Joy.
The rest of the service was the traditional “9 lessons and Carols”. The readings ranged from the story of creation, through the annunciation and the birth of Christ, to the visit of the wise men. The carols were enhanced by Alan on the organ and these lovely singers, who also contributed more modern songs.
Between the lessons and carols Eileen regaled us with “jokes”! (Say no more!)
Following the service many adjourned to the Parish Hall for good fellowship, coffee and mince pies.
